69 Leg Coffee Table

2009 · Reclaimed Douglas fir, reclaimed maple
45"L × 24"W × 18"H

Sixty-nine legs, milled from a rain-damaged SCI-Arc workbench whose maple strips had delaminated after being left outside. Andrew set out to build a coffee table with a lot of legs, using a modified finger-joint jig to place them across the top in a way that leaves room for feet while still reading as a grid — playful, but form still following function. After fitting them all, he counted 68. It was his friend Jalal who insisted on one more, to make it 69.

The reclaimed Douglas fir top is hand-planed flat rather than sanded, a detail that mattered more here than usual: getting the soft fir and the hard end-grain maple flush with each other took real care. It's a technique Andrew uses on tabletops across his work — a hand plane cuts with a knife edge along the grain for a clear, almost glass-like finish, where a sander moves across the grain with abrasives, scratching the wood and muting the view of the grain underneath. Andrew later built an 80-Leg Table, but this is the one people remember.
