La Blah Shelf

2022 · Cranbrook Academy of Art · Baltic birch plywood (CNC scrap), aluminum wire, water-based dye and polyurethane
55"L × 64"W × 30"H

Grew out of the same blob experiments that produced the Rainbow Hassock: Andrew band-saw surfing through leftover CNC scraps of Baltic birch with no plan, cutting a pile of loose amoeba shapes just to loosen up while learning 3D modeling in Rhino. He connected the plywood blobs with twisted, bent aluminum rod, working out a small engineering fix — threaded inserts tapped directly into the rod — to hold it all together into an asymmetric, five-shelf tower.

His own line from the thesis book: "First, I played, then I puzzled. It was revolutionary for my creative process." And on the cutting itself: "Why flowing blobs? Not for the shape / For the feeling of riding a bandsaw I tuned to perfection for two hours / Surfing through the salvaged Baltic Birch CNC Bones... No maps no plans / Just listen."
