Eight benches cut from the display pedestal wood used to hold artist Ben Buswell's layered-glass photo sculptures at his 2016 Samuel Freeman Gallery show, reviewed by the LA Times as "Ben Buswell's photographs look like drawings and act like sculpture." The oak came from Red Hook, Brooklyn, near Buswell's studio — a neighborhood Andrew had also once lived in himself. After the show closed, the gallery's head curator, Kate Rosenheim, proposed using the leftover wood for a set of benches in the same rippled "whale belly" design as Andrew's earlier White Whale, executed here in a lighter finish.
Samuel Freeman Gallery later closed; its Venice space became Iris Project. Years afterward, Andrew returned there himself as an artist in residence — a full-circle piece in his own history.
