Bubble Wrap Chair

2014 · Douglas fir, roll of perforated bubble wrap
42"H × 56"W × 28"D
Good Luck Gallery, Chinatown

Designed to be the most wasteful chair in the world: every time you sit down, a fresh sheet of perforated bubble wrap rolls out across the back and seat for you to pop, pulled off a roll mounted behind the chair. Underneath the joy is a pointed metaphor — most American furniture ships in from overseas, generating exactly this kind of packaging waste, when buying local and supporting the makers who skip the shipping avoids it entirely.

At its Good Luck Gallery debut, a gallery patron dismissed the work as untouchable art, then a five-year-old girl climbed onto the chair and started jumping, popping bubbles in light-up sneakers, right on cue. Andrew told her worried mother to let her keep going — "that's what you're supposed to do." The chair was later purchased by director Chris Litten (Dick Thompson) and has appeared in two of his films.
