XOX Belly Table

2013 · Reclaimed Minnesota white oak
86"L × 46"W × 30"H

Reclaimed white oak beams riddled with old mortises and cracks, repaired with over one hundred hand-chiseled bowtie stitches and patches scattered across the surface like a constellation of small, deliberate scars — as much a decorative pattern now as a structural fix. The legs use Andrew's signature double-tiered wedged mortise-and-tenon joints, built to last like the rest of the belly-table family.

It's the third table in Andrew's belly-table design vocabulary, though built from a different source: reclaimed white oak beams from a Minnesota farm. The underside pattern was CNC-carved, but the CNC work had to be outsourced to a shop elsewhere, so all the hand-chiseled repair work happened afterward, back in his own shop, using the same joinery family as the Space-era belly tables and the Dragon Table. A well-known shot shows Andrew lying on his back underneath the table, arms and legs wrapped around two of the legs, "pretending it is flying" — a deliberate re-creation of an earlier pose first shot on the Triple Belly Table.
