Cloud Pony Bench

2011 · Spalted dunnage oak, ex-Santa Fe rail line
30"L × 16"W × 16"H
LA Box Collective

Designed for the 21st floor of a Manhattan apartment, this bench is shaped like the light, floating clouds that often envelop the building it lives in. The cloud sits on four thick legs with a stance like a pony. The dunnage oak is smooth and polished, bringing out the rich beauty in the flowing grain of the well-traveled wood. Photographed by Matt Lee, seemingly afloat over a puddle; featured in the Los Angeles Times' "Off a Scrap Heap," covering the LA Box Collective's Dunnage Show.

Made from spalted dunnage oak that traveled the Santa Fe rail line for sixty years, the line that helped settle the American West. The LA Box Collective bought a batch of it as a group from a man named Bud in the San Fernando Valley, who had salvaged it off the railroad to make Kwanzaa candles for his community and had far more than he could use.
