Float Chair

2021 · Cedar beams and bolts
12'L × 32"W × 60"H
Wanted Design, NYC

A single heavy cedar beam balanced on a fulcrum, with the sitter acting as counterweight. The idea came from a morning in Winthrop, Massachusetts, when Andrew found a huge storm-washed beam on the beach next to a large stone, lifted it into place, and spent hours balancing on it at the water's edge before finally sitting down into something close to meditation.

From his own Wanted Design submission: "The sensation is like floating and over time it can become very meditative... the practical side of the brain that constantly reminds you to be responsible is forced to take the back seat as you balance, float, meditate." A poem from the Cranbrook thesis book puts it more simply: "Bobbing / Floating / Except / you learn control / it takes a sec but it is natural / And when you get it / Vestibular Ecstasy / Aka flying."
