A quick, playful first assignment at Cranbrook, made from scavenged foam, an upholstery dot, bolts, wood washers, armature wire, and a pool noodle. Andrew's artist-in-residence, Scott Klinker, told the class that a fast, unplanned sketch like this can sometimes lead to a real breakthrough — in this case it did, leading directly to the Noodle Chair. The grey foam is actually a durable, expensive bead foam rated for outdoor weather and sun; Andrew has thought about revisiting the idea as an actual set of pool chairs someday.
A short poem from the Cranbrook thesis book pairs with it: "So cute... Want to pinch its cheeks."
