Pincushion Cactus Chair

2026 · Reclaimed wood from the Space, Chelsea Market · "Cabbage" upholstery fabric and Graf Lantz merino wool
18"L × 18"W × 30"H

A thick wood frame piled with a dense cluster of round and oval blob cushions in seafoam-green wool and a green-and-white dotted fabric, with one multicolor polka-dot cushion tucked in near the top — made from "Cabbage" upholstery fabric and Graf Lantz merino wool, the same two materials credited on the Cloud Cathedral Love Seat and the Bubble Love Seat. Andrew wanted to call it the Blob Chair, in keeping with his other blob-cushion pieces, but the finished piece looked so much like an actual pincushion cactus that the resemblance was too strong to ignore, and the name changed to match. Despite the name, it's the opposite of prickly: genuinely comfortable, with the individual cushions acting almost like massage bolsters against the body.

The frame itself is built from the same reclaimed wood as the Space Café Tables, the Mini Belly Dining Table, The Wing Table, and the Triple Belly Table — made in that order, from the beams Andrew salvaged out of the Space, the former Nabisco factory building at Chelsea Market. This piece resumes that lineage roughly twenty-five years after the last of those four tables, making it the fifth and latest piece from that source.

The joinery is traditional mortise-and-tenon for the leg base and back support. The seat and back frames are mitered together at the corners and reinforced with pseudo finger joints. A long, shallow tenon runs proud along the inside edge of each frame, riding in a matching track — really a long, shallow mortise — cut into the edge of the solid-wood seat and back panels, letting that thick solid wood expand and contract with the seasons without splitting. The seat panel itself is held down with screws that pass through slotted holes in the frame and thread into the panel below; the slots let the wood creep along the frame as it moves rather than fighting it. Every one of those screw holes is patched afterward with a small square plug, visible only if you turn the chair over.
