Mini Belly Dining Table

2000 · Space Photo Studio, Chelsea Market, NYC · Reclaimed old-growth Southern Yellow pine
80"L × 46"W × 30"H

Made as a catering table for the Space Photo Studio in the former Nabisco factory building at Chelsea Market — the same wood source and year as the Space Café Tables. This is Andrew's first belly table, carved with an adjustable iron circle plane, and the first piece where he used hand-chiseled, two-tiered wedged mortise-and-tenon joinery through the top of the legs.

The building went up in the 1890s, and by the time Andrew received the wood it had spent 110 years air-drying as structural support — old wood that has settled that long doesn't want to move again. The heart pine itself would have come from old-growth native trees that could grow 150 to 175 feet tall and live 150 to 350 years, so factoring in its second life as factory beams, the timber is somewhere between 250 and 450 years old.

These two photographs, gifts from photographer Julia Wollenhaupt, are the complete surviving record of the piece — shot on film at Space Photo Studio in 2000, when getting one or two good frames was the win.
