Marshmallow Box Garden: Eliot School

2018 · Eliot School, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts · Grain-matched marshmallow boxes, one-day installation
Part of the Marshmallow Box Project — The Box · Bench · Prints · Garden: Anderson Ranch · Garden: Windfall

Tall, twisting stems grew wild toward the autumn sun, each one topped with a single square box holding one ripe, puffy marshmallow treat. Having sprouted up seemingly overnight, the garden was soon discovered by visitors to the Eliot School yard, where the marshmallows were quickly harvested and consumed with glee. Earlier that spring, in Boston's Jamaica Plain, Andrew had once again planted the rest of his marshmallow box spores, and was delighted when they grew in abundance.

The Marshmallow Box Garden has never had a permanent home — every version of it, including this one, has been a temporary installation. This one went up outdoors at the Eliot School in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts for a single day, ten years after the first version took root at Anderson Ranch. It's also the most recent place the garden has been shown, though not necessarily the last — it could always be planted again somewhere new.

Of the three sites in the garden's lineage, Eliot School was the most fun by far, thanks to how directly people could interact with the piece and to the setting itself: a community day at the school full of kids who, it turns out, are highly motivated to get close to anything involving marshmallows.
